“I know,” Rapunzel says to Pascal once the call ends, leaning over the sofa to press a kiss the scaly top of his head. He saw the worst of it after Peter disappeared, laid with her while she cried and cried, so it’s no surprise that he’s nervous, too. “I think he might be worth the risk.”
He huffs and nuzzles against her cheek, then hops up onto her shoulder so she can go into the kitchen. She busies herself with filling the kettle and putting it on the stove, then taking some cookies out of the pantry. She makes a little plate of fruit and mealworms for Pascal, putting down in his private little nook in an empty cupboard. He grumbles a little bit goes easily, climbing into his little hammock and snatching a grape with his tongue.
“I love you,” she tells him, and he squeaks it right back at her. She smiles at him and pours water into mugs, dropping a tea bag into each just as there’s a knock at her door. She swallows hard and takes a breath, patting at her cheeks before going over to answer it. She’s still in a white tank top and purple sleep pants, but it’s too late to change, now.
“Hi,” she says as she opens the door, looking at him almost shyly. “Come in.”
